NEW BRAND ALERT: ELIZABETH STONE

What made you want to be an entrepreneur

I’ve always wanted to create my own product, and be my own boss.  Before startingElizabeth Stone, I was an Art Director/graphic designer, so for years I was designing and creating for other companies.  It was kind of a happy accident that I started making jewelryas an alternate creative outlet.  In a very short period of time, I knew I had found my passion.  It was a natural transition to start building my own company/brand based on that passion.

Biggest fear in getting started

I actually don’t think I ever feared starting. It was a little scary to leave a cushy full time job, but  I fell so madly in love with creating jewelry, it really felt like a natural choice to dive into it.

Who / what inspires you the most

This is a tough one. So many and so much!  First and foremost, my son. Showing him that you can take something you love and turn it into your career is really important and a daily inspiration for me.   I often pull inspiration from my musical heroes like David Bowie, all forms of Art & Architecture, the ocean, gemstones, fashion & pop culture to name a few.

Best advise for aspiring designers

Don’t compare your start to someone else’s middle.

Most unexpected thing about yourself

I was once nominated for an Emmy award for designing

What is the most unexpected thing about you?

NEW BRAND ALERT: CAPSUL

What made you want to be an entrepreneur

I started my first business at 22 and have been a serial entrepreneur ever since. Although I also had a successful career path in finance, the entrepreneurial ventures are where my passion and creativity flourish. I love waking up everyday to tackle the challenges at hand, coming up with creative solutions, and going to bed knowing that I’m one step closer to my goal.  As a single mom, I also deeply appreciate the flexibility entrepreneurship offers!

Biggest fear in getting started

As a new brand, the biggest fear is always that your brand doesn’t resonate with your audience. Fortunately, the reception to Capsul so far has been overwhelmingly positive!

Who / what inspires you the most

I’m most inspired by other creative talents and entrepreneurs that solve real world problems and give back to the community such as Mark Zuckerberg, Angelina Jolie, and Warren Buffett.

Best advise for aspiring designers

Establish your brand mission and core brand values first. Design accordingly.

Most unexpected thing about yourself

People are most surprised to find that i was a nightclub owner and that I’m a gourmet home chef.

Friends is all about fun and positivity, and we feel lucky we get to spend our work life in such a friendly place!

What is your favorite category to buy and where do you do most of your buying?

We love buying jewelry and we love buying vintage clothing! Our buying is split between trade shows, vintage wholesalers, and submissions from the neighborhood as well as international vendors.

Between the pool parties, lavish dinners and the actual festival - BUTIK brands were spotted on some of the most sought after influencer babes out there.  These trend setting lovelies were decked out in their desert wear and they topped it off with the best jewels around. They layered up with Five and Two chokers, tied one on with the bandana bolo from The 2Bandits, added in a pop of color with Yunis K pom pom earrings and kept themselves centered with the Cam chakra necklaces!  Shop all our brands here!

RETAILER SPOTLIGHT: PENELOP T

What inspires your vision and identity for PENELOPE T ?

We have built this image in our minds of the the Penelope T gal.  She reads both the classics and trashy novels.  She loves to dress up, but is just as comfortable in cut-offs and sneakers.  She travels the world and finds herself in all types of delightfully unexpected places.  She isn’t really a certain age, but a certain type of women always on the quest for new beautiful things to see and acquire- she finds it in art, music, places, and on other people.  We think of her when we designed the stores, and when we buy for the stores.

What is your favorite aspect of being a retailer?

When a new season begins and the store is filled with fresh new merchandise to play with!  Getting customers to step out of their box and try new styles is pretty amazing too!

What is your favorite category to buy and where do you do most of your buying?

I swear we aren’t just saying this because BUTIK sells jewelry and accessories- but that is by far our favorite category to buy for. When nothing fits, and you really want to change your look, a fabulous necklace, scarf, hat, etc. can make all of the difference.

What is the most unexpected thing about you?

We have been friends for 20 years, and well before we had a store, we wanted to start our own clothing line called Mannick (get it, Manne and Nickie) Insert laughing face emoji here!  Happy that we ended up where we did!

PENELOPE T stocks FIVE AND TWO, KAREN LONDON, MAY MARTIN FINE, THE 2BANDITS, WOLF CIRCUS, BAUXO & ELLE LOUISE

NEW BRAND ALERT: YUNIS K

What made you want to be an entrepreneur

I have been focused on fashion since I was young.  I loved sneaking into my mom’s closet, digging through her jewelry box and going through all her dresses to create various outfits from head to toe.  As I got older, I knew I wanted to be my own lady boss and I then spent years shaping my tastes and understanding of fashion until I felt ready to venture off with my own company.

Biggest fear in getting started

Taking the first step was both my biggest fear and the most exciting part. I worked at a few very well respected corporate fashion companies for over 6 years. It was an amazing learning experience but I always knew I wanted to create something on my own when I was ready. Taking the first leap and leaving everything behind was terrifying and exhilarating. I met a ton of strong women in the fashion world who were very supportive and have amazing people in my life who really believed in me, and that was a huge help to give me the confidence to go for it.

Who / what inspires you the most

Living in Los Angeles, I love walking around and seeing girls out with their own creative and individual sense of style, how they layer things and are not afraid to mess around with pieces from different eras inspires me. Traveling is also a huge part of my life. I recently came back from Bali and was inspired by all the pops of colors in the streets and incorporated that vibe into my line.  Recent trips to Paris, Germany, London and Tokyo have all been inspirational in finding hidden gems and shaping my design process as well.

Best advise for aspiring designers

If this is your dream, run with it.  It will be a rollercoaster ride but totally worth it. Most importantly, make sure to take in every great moment with a victory dance.

Most unexpected thing about yourself

Though I’ve become a California girl, I was born and raised in New Orleans until my teens. I used to have a Southern accent that still sneaks into conversations from time to time, and if I see crawfish or oysters anywhere on a menu, I have to have it.

BRAND LINE SHEETS

New Brand Alert: Jonesy Wood

What made you want to be an entrepreneur

I come from a family of entrepreneurs and luckily I’m married to one as well so it just felt natural. I also enjoy the freedom to create designs and my own schedule. Having 3 little ones back to back made it difficult to have a 9-5er which made me fall in to the jewelry business.

Biggest fear in getting started

Hoping people will like my designs and proving to myself that I can do this while managing a household.

Who / what inspires you the most

Traveling and meeting unique human beings inspire my designs: the colors, the textures, the ‘lost in translation’ feeling of being in a different country. We LOVE to travel!

My three little girls inspire me to be a better momand wife but I mostly want to show them that if you work really hard at something you love then you can be successful at anything.

Best advise for aspiring designers

Believe in yourself and your designs, follow your heart and work hard. It will eventually pay off!

Most unexpected thing about yourself

I had 3 home births

JONESY WOOD

RETAILER SPOTLIGHT: GUNNARHAUS

What inspires your vision and identity for GUNNARHAUS?

My vision for GUNNARHAUS comes from a lifelong quest for finding the beauty in all aspects of life. I have always been hyper attentive to design and aesthetic quality. My mother is a complete interior decorating genius who always surrounded our family with beauty and the appreciation for all that encompasses art and design. My early exposure to the creation of beauty and the influence it can have on people led me to create GUNNARHAUS.

The identity of the site comes from my desire to bring attention back to the intersection of craftsmanship and style. I have been very turned off by the disaster that is fast-fashion. Over consumption of cheap, disposable clothing is a detriment to our earth, closets and pocketbooks. I value being able to offer an alternative. On the site, we stock mostly American Made goods for Women, Men and the home. We also have a large selection of Organic clothing, hand forged artistic accessories and even some leather and home items made in our very own studios!

We work hard to maintain an ecommerce boutique that gives people of like minds a place to shop quality, curated goods from the comfort of wherever they are.

What is your favorite aspect of being a retailer?

There are so many types of art, and to me, fashion is my preferred method of artistic expression. Making a living off of a craft is a difficult thing to do in this day and age of technology. My favorite part of being a retailer is being able to bring designers art into view of a greater audience, and in that way, support their art, creativity and livelihood.

What is your favorite category to buy and where do you do most of your buying?

After spending many years wholesaling contemporary women’s apparel, the category can sometimes feel like it is ALL business. Accessories and home goods on the other hand, have a special sparkle to me and really get my juices flowing! My goal is to always keep evolving in a way that at least one category can remain entirely inspiring.

The jewelry I carry on the site is sourced exclusively from Butik or working directly with small unrepresented designers who I find through research online or who I meet in person at art shows and Maker focused events

What is the most unexpected thing about you?

While I do work in a creative field, I am actually extremely “Type A” in a way that helps balance out my creative tendencies. I am thankful of this at times, but also can be driven batty by my inability to let things lie as they are! The personality combo proves exhausting at times, but helps to push me along as I build my own business!

GUNNARHAUS stocks FIVE AND TWO and WOLF CIRCUS

Vegas here we come!

It’s that time of the year again… Project Vegas! Get your yard stick drinks and buying dollars ready.

Q) Why Project?

A) The only place you’ll need to shop on the west coast. This market is a one-stop-shop for apparel, accessories, and lifestyle.

Q) What Will I find there?

A) Project provided an aesthetic and central venue for Butik to showcase it's vintage-inspired bohemian-chic accessories to it’s west coast accounts.  Now, we’re a major player in the accessories section of this show - while still maintaining the one-on-one intimate buying experience you’ve come to love from us. We’re thrilled to be situated at a show that highlights all of the best emerging and staple designers!

Q) What is trending for Summer?

A) We’ll be showing lots of our best-selling styles in Silver. This is going to be a heavy-hitting color for summer. Bright silvers, Rhodiums, and turquoise. Always a good summer set-up. With that being said, Gold isn’t going anywhere - we’re still loving pendants, medallions, and lots of layers. Don’t forget this trend - ZODIAC. Must-haves.

Q) Which brands are you showing?

A) *insert list of brands showing* linked to their catalogues?

Q) What is your booth # and can I make an appointment?

A) Booth 16258! Yes! Email info@butikshowroom.com to make your appointment - we have a few spots left! : )

Can’t wait to see you there! <3

RETAILER SPOTLIGHT: CHILD OF WILD

What inspires your vision and identity for Child of Wild?

The conception for my company came right after I graduated college. My major was Humanities, and through courses on Theology, Art History, and Philosophy, I was exposed to the vivid diversity of cultures and thought. I wanted a highly researched website full of interesting and rare jewelry, each piece having a historic and cultural relevance, as well as giving these nomadic artists credit for their work. For our "New Culture" section, we search out artists who have a strong artistic direction, sustainable practices and hand-create their pieces. We love our Butik Showroom brands: Five & Two and CAM, for their modern take on style. Both their minimal and simplistic details reflect current trends of today!

What is your favorite aspect of being a retailer?

The freedom! We get to try out different trends and designs at our own free will. When we find a new jewelry designer or a rad vintage piece, we have the freedom to tell the complete story to the customer. We get to be the curators of our own collections and get to style and photograph with only our customers interest in mind.

What is your favorite category to buy and where do you do most of your buying?

I am a sucker for a good ring stack! I love an eclectic hand full of metal, both vintage and new. Each one can tell an individual story, but then collectively they can also represent your personal story. I love natural stones and high-quality metals. We started our business based on vintage, Native American jewelry. I have since found sources all over the world that have the same integrity and meaning for their jewelry. I search high and low looking for interesting and unique jewelry. We have traveled as far as Istanbul, Turkey to meet with artists to purchase and learn from.

What is the most unexpected thing about you?

I am OBSESSED with tiny things. In my desk drawer I have a collection of miniature cacti, a tiny Vishnu, the smallest little baby feather you have EVER seen and many... many more. It's often a gift from my employees of friends.
